which smoke alarms are right for me?

    Hardwired or battery?

Hardwired means it's connected to your mains power with a backup battery for blackouts; if replacing hardwired choose a 240volt smoke alarm and have an electrician install it.

10-year battery means it has a battery that will last for the service life of the smoke alarm (10years) as its power supply.

You can install it yourself using screws or our purpose made double-sided tape.

If you are replacing a hardwired smoke alarm you must replace it with a hardwired smoke alarm.

Otherwise, a 10-year battery powered alarm is a great option as you can install it yourself

    what type? and how many?

Smoke alarms in the dwelling must:

    i) be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014); and

ii) not also contain an ionisation sensor; and

iii) be less than 10 years old; and

    iv) operate when tested; and

    v) be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together.

All smoke alarms sold by MiFire meet these requirements

Smoke alarms must be installed on each storey:

    i) in each bedroom; and

ii) in hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling; or

iii) if there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey; and

iv) if there are no bedrooms on a storey at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.

Smoke alarms must be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, or a combination of both may be allowed.

    keeping them working

Smoke alarms should be cleaned and tested monthly by the home occupier. Follow manufacturers instructions.

A smoke alarm remote is a handheld or wall mounted controller for the smoke alarms installed in your home.

The remote enables you to either test or silence your alarms. No more using a broom, climbing on chairs, or waving the tea towel to stop that screaming alarm.

Landlords must ensure they have the correct type and number of smoke alarms installed the correct locations.

Smoke alarms must be tested & cleaned within 30 days of the start of a new lease.

Landlords must test and clean the smoke alarms annually.
